3 hour workshop in London
Description:

The wisdom of Zen Buddhism explored through images. A unique single session workshop, looking at the causes of stress and dissatisfaction — and discovering a clearer, more peaceful way of being. Using visual guides and a series of thought experiments inspired by Zen, we’ll explore how perception shapes reality and how changing how we see changes how we live.

The workshop is divided into sections. In each section, I present a series of images to introduce and explore a theme—such as the causes of suffering or how we perceive objects. This is followed by an exercise, which might be a short writing task, a body scan, or a puzzle. We then reflect and discuss the exercise, before closing each section with a guided thought experiment mediation. The purpose of this is to take the ideas we’ve explored and turn them from abstract concepts into direct experience.

In this workshop, you’ll experience a new perspective on yourself and the world—seeing through the illusions of separation and permanence. You’ll discover your deep interconnectedness with all things and learn to rest in presence, openness, and calm. The peace you’ve been seeking is already here, and you’ll find a source of contentment that doesn’t depend on external circumstances. It could be the beginning of a new journey of spiritual discovery, or simply a relaxing and unique day to explore yourself and your place in the world.

About the speaker, Daniel Thomas Smith

Daniel Thomas Smith originally trained as a scientist before moving into photography — a path shaped by a lifelong fascination with observation, perception, and the art of truly seeing.

A meditator for over 15 years, Daniel has spent the last five years studying Zen Buddhism with Zen master Julian Daizan Skinner Roshi. Through Zen practice, he has found a profound shift in the way he experiences both himself and the world — moving from anxiety and disconnection towards presence, playfulness, and a deeper sense of unity with life.

His work and teaching explore awareness, perception, and the transformative potential of seeing beyond the surface of things.
